Kobe Bryant, one of the super stars of National Basketball Association (NBA) is no more. He along with his daughter Gianna Bryant and 7 others were killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California on January 26th evening.
Tributes poured in for the basketball star and his daughter’s death from all around the world including movie and sports fraternity. People remembered him for his time in NBA with Los Angeles Lakers team when he was at his best. He is regarded as one of the top most and greatest basketball players of all time.
Kobe Bean Bryant was born in Philadelphia, United States of America where he also grew up. Being a son of former NBA player, he grew up to be in the same sports as his father. Soon after his graduation, he entered NBA draft and was selected by the Charlotte Hornets. He was later traded with Los Angeles Lakers team. He made a name for himself as a rookie and won the NBA championships for his team between 2000 and 2002 consecutively. He got a nick name “Black Mamba” for his effectiveness in his games.
After facing a sexual assault case in 2003 by a hotel employee, his reputation went down as well as his career. With career at stake he came back strongly in the coming years being a frontrunner for his team’s success. He led the NBA score charts for 2 consecutive seasons (2005 to 2007). His highest point in NBA career was in 2006 when he scored 81 points in a single game against the Toronto Raptors. It was the second highest points scored in a single game after 100 points by Wilt Chamberlain in 1964. He was also named as the most valuable player (MVP) of the season in 2008.
Kobe Bryant again led his team to two consecutive championships in 2009 and 2010 seasons and was also named as the MVP in both of the season finals. He was the face of NBA till 2013 after which he suffered many injuries which led him to his retirement during 2015-16 season.
He had achieved a lot of success throughout his career. There were many career defining moments for Bryant and some of them were when he was the youngest player at 34 years to score 30,000 career points, becoming all-time leading scorer for his team, the Los Angeles Lakers. He participated in an all-star game for a record 18 consecutive times in his career. He is also tied with Bob Pettit in winning the most all-star MVP awards (4 times) in his career. One of his main achievements in his career was when he won gold medals with the US team in the Olympics.
Bryant has also starred in many movies, television series, and music videos. He also had a name for his philanthropy as he donated hood amount of money to charities and for the education and health benefits of children. He also has a book reflecting his career named Mamba Mentality: How I play.
Kobe Bryant wanted his daughter Gianna Bryant to keep up his legacy and their deaths remains a tragedy for the sports fraternity.
